Brewer nears deadline on moving Ariz. primary date

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Jan Brewer faces an approaching deadline to act on an idea that would likely reshuffle the calendar for picking a Republican presidential nominee.

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says the governor is considering her options but still leaning toward moving up Arizona's primary to Jan. 31 to give Arizonans a louder voice nationally.

To move the primary to Jan. 31 from its current date of Feb. 28, Brewer would have to issue a proclamation by Saturday.

Holding the Arizona primary on Jan. 31 would violate Republican Party rules to punish states that try to leapfrog four early voting states -- Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

At least some of those states are expected to move up their February dates in order to still go first.
