Body of Fort Apache hotshot found early Sunday

Posted: Updated:

Searchers  early Sunday morning found the body of a Fort Apache hotshot  firefighter who was helping fight the lightning-caused Diamond Fire in eastern Arizona.

An incident command spokesperson said the firefighter was reported missing when  the Fort Apache hotshots gathered after completing a hand line around the approximately 35-acre fire on the Fort Apache reservation Saturday afternoon.

Repeated attempts to reach the firefighter via his handheld radio were unsuccessful and a search of the rugged and steep terrain ensued, the spokesperson said.

Several sweeps of the area in eastern Arizona by various agencies continued through the night.  The firefighter's body was found about 6:15 a.m. Sunday.

An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of death, the spokesperson said.
