CBS 5 viewer adopts pup rescued from hot car

Posted: Updated:

Some say Skip the dog was perfectly named because of how he bounces when he walks.  Others think it's because your heart may skip a beat when you read his story.

Skip proves that it's not just cats who have nine lives. The terrier dachshund mix was left in a hot car with the windows rolled up on one of the hottest days of the year last weekend.  The SUV was parked at the Swap Mart near 40th and Washington streets. Passers-by called it into police.

When officers Scott Sefranka and Kiley Venard arrived on the scene, they said Skip wasn't looking too good. "His little face was pressed up against the rear glass in the back passenger compartment", said Sefranka.

The officers brought the dog to Arizona Animal Welfare League where he was nursed back to life. "We got him some fluids and he recovered pretty quickly, fortunately", said Monika Sperke with the AAWL.

Sperke said that even at 80 degrees a car's internal temperature can reach the 100s. That's why the officer's actions were not only the right thing, but heroic. "He was very lucky to be saved by the Phoenix police officers," Sperke said.

As for the people responsible, they fled in the same vehicle where Skip had been confined. So far, they have not been located, but if they are they can face animal cruelty charges.

As for Skip, he was adopted by a lottery system. The new parents were CBS 5 viewers who saw his story on our newscast.
