White supremacists offered to arm border vigilantes with homemade explosive devices, according to a law enforcement intelligence bulletin leaked by Internet hackers.
The document surfaced as a result of a massive security breach at the Department of Public Safety. Hackers accessed the DPS computer system and posted thousands of pages of internal memos and security alerts, some of which were put out by the Arizona Counterterrorism Information Center.
The bulletin focuses on the January arrest of Jeffery Harbin, a suspected member of the National Socialist Movement. Court documents recently unsealed and obtained by CBS 5 News describe the case. Harbin is accused of making six pounds of explosive aluminum and creating two homemade bombs.
The court documents indicate a confidential informant tipped off the FBI, which began investigating Harbin. Shortly before his arrest, investigators allege Harbin offered to provide the explosive devices to vigilantes for use in operations along the U.S. border with Mexico.
A separate bulletin shows a Border Patrol agent found an explosive device on a known smuggling trail north of the border. That device exploded while members of a bomb squad were investigating it.
The bulletins do not conclude whether the incidents are related, or whether this is a growing problem.
A federal grand jury indicted Harbin on two counts of unlawful possession of an unregistered explosive device and one count of unlawful transportation of explosive materials.
