Position Summary: In order to be an intern with CBS 5 News, you must be studying journalism at an accredited university. You must also be receiving school credit for your internship. You need to be a Junior or Senior in school and be able to work at least 20 hours per week. The nature of the internship is meant to mimic real jobs in the newsroom. There will be phone answering and message taking, to the extent one would do as an assignment editor or reporter. Any special projects done would be equal to that of someone on staff.
In the spring and fall semesters, there is a bi-weekly report about what was learned in each section of the internship plus a final evaluation. In the summer, reports are due weekly. There is no winter session.
The internship is designed to teach a prospective reporter/producer/assignment editor what it takes to put a news story on the air. Interns learn all the jobs in a newsroom via a scheduled rotation throughout the semester. You spend time with Assignment Editors, Producers, Photographers, the Local News Share, Reporters and our web department. If you are looking for an internship where you spend all of your time with reporters this is not the best fit for you.
Travel: Interns will be required to be at the station at a required time. Interns may need to drive their personal vehicle to a location for a story.
