PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Family and friends are remembering a Phoenix police officer who was killed in the line of duty five years ago.

Police say Edward James Rose, 23, fatally shot Officer George Cortez Jr., 23, after the officer tried to arrest Rose at a west Phoenix check-cashing store on July 27, 2007.

The shooting was captured on the store's surveillance video.

In October of 2010, a Maricopa County Superior Court jury handed down the death penalty against Rose who had pleaded guilty.

Rose's girlfriend, 21-year-old Norma Lisa Lopez, pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder in Cortez's death.

Authorities said Lopez reportedly distracted Cortez, which allowed Rose to shoot him.
