MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A 61-count indictment is handed up against a Mesa doctor in connection with patient misconduct, the Maricopa County attorney's office said.

Police arrested Dr. Richard Lewis, 53, on June 5 on suspicion of two counts of sexual abuse. The charges stem from a pair of women who alleged the cardiologist inappropriately touched them during medical exams.

Mesa police said the number of victims claiming they were sexually assaulted by the cardiologist grew in the month following his arrest. The indictment covers 19 victims and includes allegations going back to 2004, according to the county attorney's office.

The first of the two original incidents occurred on Oct. 30, 2008, when Lewis fondled a patient's breasts during a pre-surgery exam, police said.

The second incident happened on June 4, 2009, when Lewis was performing a pacemaker operation, investigators said. As the procedure was finishing, the patient awoke to sharp pain in her breasts, police said.

As the sedation wore off, she realized that Lewis had his hands under her gown and he was squeezing her breast, officers said.

The indictment lists one count of sexual assault, 46 counts of sexual abuse and 14 counts of assault.
