PHOENIX -- Meredith Corporation (NYSE:MDP), KPHO CBS 5 and Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication are now accepting applications for their second annual nationwide fellowship program for minority broadcast journalism students.“The success of our inaugural minority fellowship makes it an easy decision to sponsor the program again,” said Paul Karpowicz, President of Meredith’s Broadcasting Group. “The students learn what it takes to get a job in broadcast journalism and we have the opportunity to preview talented students for possible work at our stations.”The Meredith Corporation-Cronkite Fellowship Program requests applications from top minority broadcast journalism students from schools across the nation.Last year’s participants can vouch for the valuable lessons and experiences the program provides.
“My photographer gave me much more individualized instruction than I ever received in class,” said Sarah Ralston from Arizona State University. “I got to go on a breaking news story; it was great to be in the middle of it.”“I couldn’t believe it when I heard I was only one of 12 in the country to be chosen,” added Hubert Tate of Jackson State University. “Having the chance to get hands-on experience in a big market is really a priceless opportunity.”Participants will spend January 6-12, 2008 working with instructors from the Cronkite School and KPHO reporters, producers, editors and videographers. At the week’s end, students will produce a 30-minute newscast.“The students who are chosen to participate in this program will have a clear edge when they compete for their first job,” said Steven Hammel, KPHO vice president and general manager. “They will leave KPHO with real newsroom experience and a professional newscast in their portfolio.”The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University is a nationally recognized professional program that prepares students for careers in broadcast journalism. The school’s dean, Chris Callahan, says their participation in the fellowship program fulfills the school’s mission of helping prepare students for successful careers.“Our school is nationally known for excellence in broadcast journalism,” Callahan said. “Working with Meredith Corporation, KPHO, and our colleagues from other schools across the country solidifies our reputation and supports our goal to bring more minority students into the business.”Potential participants in the program must be full-time minority students majoring in broadcast journalism at a U.S. college or university and within 12 months of graduation.
