ASU Club Lacrosse Team Suspended

UPDATED: 8:49 am MST February 22, 2009

Arizona State University has suspended its men’s club lacrosse team until August 2009 because of an incident involving hazing and underage drinking, according to the team’s Web site.

The Web site also indicates that the team will be subject to a two-year probationary period.

According to a team booster, the team was verbally made aware of the suspension late last week. They expect to receive a letter from the university detailing the suspension sometime Monday. The team will likely appeal the decision.

A team booster confirmed to CBS 5 News the suspension is related to an incident that happened earlier this year involving hazing and underage drinking. Most of the team attended this event.

Hazing and underage drinking are violations of the ASU Student Code of Conduct.

The team does not, however, believe the suspension, which cancels the entire 2009 spring season for the club team, is a fair punishment, according to the team booster.

“The players understand they did something wrong; they made a mistake,” head coach Chris Malone told Lacrosse Magazine. “But I’m not sure if the punishment fits this situation.”

CBS 5 News asked both Malone and team president Ben Zils for interviews Saturday. As of this writing, neither had responded to our request.

Lacrosse is not an officially-sanctioned varsity sport at ASU and receives minimal funding from the university.
