PHOENIX -- With Super Bowl just three weeks away, Arizona's Better Business Bureau reports an influx of calls from concerned homeowners, questioning offers to help them rent their homes for the big event.

"Each year, hotels are blocked by the NFL, sponsors and media, thus creating the demand for home rentals," said BBB President/CEO Matthew Fehling. "Many home rentals will be arranged by corporate clients."

Fehling offered some tips for people who are considering renting their homes:

Check out the company with BBB before providing any personal information or paying a fee. Review the company's BBB Reliability Report for the experiences other consumers have had with the company. Reports are available at the Arizona Better Business Bureau Web site.

Get everything in writing from the company helping to rent the property.

Use a local property rental company that specializes in this type of transaction rather than an out-of-town company.

Do not pay upfront fees to post your listing on a Super Bowl rental website via a wire service.

Require a damage deposit and have a signed rental agreement that states how any damage or theft will be handled.

Renters may expect maid service. Sometimes homeowners provide the daily maid service themselves, which gives them the opportunity to check on their home each day.

"Consumers still looking to rent their homes must consider if the potential income from renting their home is really worth it. You may have strangers in your house drinking, smoking, and using your personal space having little or no control of what goes on," Fehling said
