Ojibwe shaman Birch Trueblood's not so sure his healing arts aren't just so much smoke and burnt herbs.

But he rides out his self-doubt, especially since he's being paid to pacify unearthly presences at an historic bed-and-breakfast run by childhood friend, Rochelle LeClair.

Rochelle's not too hepped about Birch's mystical skills either. But once back in her life, he calls up all kinds of specters from the past, ones Rochelle thinks might be best left buried.

Although some imagery in "A View of the River" is eerie, this ain't no ghost story.

It's a rich, layered tale of regaining pride, finding clarity, and recognizing love when it's tossed one's way.

Kathleen Eagle is simply one of today's best writers of romance and women's fiction.
