PHOENIX -- There may soon be a new tool to help solve Arizona’s cold cases, if a bill making its way through the Arizona Senate that would create cold case registries passes. The registries would create a central database in every state law enforcement agency for information about unsolved rapes and murders."It would be incredible, “ Mike Durham said. His friend Bob Krahn was shot to death on Grand Avenue in Phoenix in 1996. Krahn’s slaying is still unsolved.Durham said it has been frustrating to work with detectives to help solve his friend’s killing.“I think we've had a new detective every two or three years. They retire, they rotate, things of this sort, and so at some point your always re-explaining that case,” Durham said. The registries would help eliminate that issue by providing up to date lists of the detectives working the case and contact information for victims’ family members and friends."I think it can also be motivating to officers to know that there's someone still out there who cares about this case,” State Sen. John Huppenthal, R, said.He proposed the cold case registry after hearing many stories like Durham."I think there's the potential for many, many people to register and be helpful,” Huppenthal said.Durham just hopes it will help him get closer to the justice he has sought for his friend for 13 years."It's not right and the killer doesn't care that it's not fair and it's not right," Durham said. "That killer needs to know we want to come face to face with him."The cold case registries will not cost Arizona taxpayers any money and no one has spoken out in opposition to the proposal.Nevertheless, Huppenthal said there is a good chance lawmakers will not vote for it this year.Huppenthal said lawmakers are behind on their work because of the state’s fiscal crisis, and the cold case registry bill may never get to the floor for a vote.
