PHOENIX -- Two Cave Creek city council candidates cut the cards late Monday afternoon to see who would win a seat on the town's council.Thomas McGuire, the incumbent, and Adam Trenk, his challenger, tied in May's runoff election, and state law requires the winner be chosen "by lot."Both men finisished with exactly 660 votes in last month's election and the recount was the same.A judge presided and shuffled the cards. Trenk drew the high card, a king of hearts and scored the seventh spot on the council. McGuire drew a six of hearts.According to town clerk Carrie Dyrek, Trenk will be sworn in prior to Monday night's council meeting.McGuire said he was a little surprised when he heard how state law requires a game of chance to settle a deadlocked election but he said he figures cards are better than a shoot-out at high noon.
