Terasa Ferrier was ready to be a mom.

She had baby clothes. She had a car seat. She had even picked out a name for her child. The soon-to-be-arriving daughter was going to be named Lillianne Rose.

But all the preparations came to a tragic end in late January. Ferrier had gone to see a doctor for a sonogram.

“At every other time, (the baby) was incredibly active, and this time, she wasn’t at all,” Ferrier said.

Lillianne Rose had passed away. On Jan. 24, at Verde Valley Medical Center, Ferrier delivered the stillborn baby.

Ferrier received a packet from the hospital, offering her resources to cope with the tragedy. One of the things included in the packet was information about a photographer named Bob Coates.

Coates lives in Sedona. Normally, he shoots weddings or corporate functions. But, occasionally, he takes pictures for an organization called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

The organization has photographers who take pictures, free of charge, for parents who are dealing with the death of an infant.

When Coates was contacted about Ferrier’s loss, he immediately drove to the hospital. He conducted a photo shoot with Terasa and Lillianne Rose and put together a CD of pictures.

“You can tell it’s really important, that it really means something to them,” Coates said.

“For somebody to do that, just out of the kindness of their heart, was just amazing,” Ferrier said. “He does beautiful work.”

Ferrier treasures the pictures on the CD and keeps a printed-out version of Lillianne Rose next to her bed.

“Every night and every morning, I wake up to her and I talk to her,” Ferrier said. “You wake up sometimes and think ‘Did it really happen?’ But with (the pictures), at least you have something to show you that you were really a mommy.”

That is why Ferrier asked to pay it forward to Coates, to give her “a way of saying thank you that (she) couldn’t say in any other way.”

Earlier this week, Ferrier gave Coates the $500 as part of the Pay It Forward segment. She read him the letter she wrote, saying “without his kindness, I would have nothing to remember my baby with.”

Coates said he would pay the money forward once more, donating it to the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep organization.
