Cardinals Release RB James

POSTED: 4:02 pm MST April 28, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Arizona Cardinals released three players on Tuesday, the biggest name among them is veteran running back Edgerrin James.

The 30-year-old, in his third season with Arizona in 2008, rushed for just 514 yards and three touchdowns on 133 carries while adding 12 receptions for 85 yards.

Since his signing as a free agent prior to the 2006 season out of Indianapolis, the Miami-Florida product compiled 2,895 rushing yards and 16 scores on 794 carries over 45 games (32 starts).

He added 74 catches for 506 yards for the Cardinals, who won the NFC West and advanced to Super Bowl XLIII before suffering a heartbreaking 27-23 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cutting James might have become an easier decision after the franchise drafted touted Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells late in the first round of last Saturday's NFL draft.

Over 141 games through 10 pro seasons with Indianapolis and Arizona, the south Florida native has gained 12,121 yards with 80 TDs on 2,982 carries, supplementing his rushing prowess with 3,345 receiving yards and 11 scores on 430 receptions.

In addition, the Cards released cornerback Rod Hood and defensive end Travis LaBoy.

Hood collected 105 tackles and six interceptions over 31 games the last two seasons with the Cardinals.

LaBoy posted 38 tackles and four sacks in 13 games last season, his first after arriving from the Tennessee Titans.
