New Orleans Awarded Super Bowl XLVII

POSTED: 2:37 pm MST May 19, 2009

(Sports Network) - Saints owner Tom Benson announced on Tuesday the city of New Orleans was selected by NFL owners as the location for Super Bowl XLVII in the year 2013.

Miami and Phoenix had also made bids for the league's championship game.

"This is a great accomplishment for New Orleans, and the significance of bringing the Super Bowl to our city and region can't be overstated," said Benson, who has owned the Saints for 25 years. "From every perspective, this shows that our city is on the rise, viable and thriving, and I have great faith in what we can accomplish and the impact it will have, starting today. This is my hometown, and maybe we don't need to talk about New Orleans being on the way back anymore. New Orleans is back, and today is proof."

This will be the 10th time New Orleans will host the event and first since Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Louisiana Superdome and the surrounding area in 2005.

Hosting a Super Bowl generates an estimated $300-$400 million of positive economical activity to a city/region.

Better play over their last four games has the Carolina Panthers thinking they can get back into the playoff mix. A win over the undefeated New Orleans Saints this weekend would go a long way in validating those beliefs.
