Tampa, FL -- (Sports Network) - The Steelers now stand alone with six Super Bowl championships, but this title was one for the ages. Santonio Holmes soared into the air to make a toe-tapping, six-yard touchdown catch of a Ben Roethlisberger pass in the end zone with 35 seconds remaining, giving Pittsburgh a dramatic 27-23 win over Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. Larry Fitzgerald caught a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead 64-yard strike from Kurt Warner with 2:37 left, as the Cardinals, in their first Super Bowl, rallied from a 13-point deficit to grab the lead. Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers (15-4) to the Super Bowl championship against Seattle just three years ago, then engineered the winning drive, which included a 40-yard connection to Holmes to move the ball to the six. On the next play, a leaping Holmes had the ball go through his hands in the left corner of the end zone. Holmes then came up with a catch for history, securing his feet to the ground while stretching to make the catch in triple-coverage in the back right corner, just as safety Aaron Francisco forced out the receiver. The TD was confirmed after a video review. "I said to him (Roethlisberger) I wanted to be the guy to make plays for this team," said Holmes. "I wanted to continue to be great and great players step up in big-time games to make plays." Ironically, Giants' receiver Plaxico Burress' famed touchdown grab to give New York the Super Bowl XLII title over the New England Patriots also came with 35 seconds remaining on the clock. Arizona (12-8) had little time to work with, but managed to push past midfield; however, Warner was stripped of the football and the Steelers recovered in the waning seconds. Warner's arm may have been moving forward when he was hit by LaMarr Woodley, but there was no replay review by officials. The six Super Bowl titles move the Steelers past the five of Dallas and San Francisco. Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin, aged 36, was the youngest coach to participate in a Super Bowl and is now the youngest to win one. "I'm also the most blessed coach to work with our staffs and this group of men right here," said Tomlin at the post-game trophy presentation. "I cannot say enough of what these guys are willing to do for one another and for you out there, Steeler Nation." Holmes was named the game's MVP after catching nine passes for 131 yards, and that included four catches for 73 yards on the game-winning eight-play, 78- yard march. "This has been our story all year," said Tomlin. "Steeler football is 60 minutes. It's never going to be pretty...but these guys will fight to the end." Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison, the league's defensive player of the year, returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the opening half for the longest play in Super Bowl history. Roethlisberger connected on 21-of-30 passes for 256 yards and was picked off once, while Willie Parker led the rushing game with 19 carries for 53 yards. Warner, who was MVP of Super Bowl XXXIV in the Rams' win over Tennessee, went 31-of-43 for 377 yards with three TDs. Fitzgerald, who came into the game already with a single-postseason yards record, caught seven passes for 127 yards. Fitzgerald finished this postseason with 546 yards receiving and seven touchdowns, covering four games. After the game, Warner wouldn't commit to retiring or say if he's coming back for another season. "There's things that make you want to come back, there's things that say 'man, I can't wait to have a little bit of a break,'" said Warner. "I really don't know at this point. I don't want to make any emotional decisions on anything. I enjoyed this season." Anquan Boldin caught eight passes for 84 yards for the Cardinals, who had a surprising run after winning the NFC West, beating Atlanta, Carolina and then Philadelphia, which was the third-ranked defense in the NFL. They nearly got by the league's top-rated defense, but faltered thanks in part to 11 penalties for 106 yards. "It's difficult especially when you come out on the end we did," said Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt. "I think you fight so hard to get back into this game, then you take the lead right there at the end and they come back and score a touchdown. It's very difficult. That's why this game is so great. That's why the fans love it so much." Arizona self-destructed in penalties, committing three personal fouls on one drive, the last coming when Adrian Wilson plowed over holder Mitch Berger as Jeff Reed connected on a 27-yard field goal late in the third. Despite a new set of downs, Pittsburgh had to settle for a 21-yard Reed field goal with 2:11 remaining in the third, expanding its lead to 20-7. Fitzgerald was limited to one catch through three quarters, but he heated up in the fourth as the Cardinals closed the gap to 20-14 with 7:33 remaining. On 3rd-and-goal from the one, Warner threw a fade pattern to Fitzgerald, who leaped over cornerback Ike Taylor. The grab, which came in the right corner of the end zone, capped an eight-play, 87-yard drive with Warner going 8-for-8 during the march. Arizona pushed as close as the Pittsburgh 26 on its next drive, but was later forced to punt after a holding penalty. The kick left the Steelers at their one, but on third down Roethlisberger completed a pass to a diving Holmes to the 20. The play was for naught, as center Justin Hartwig was called for holding in the end zone on defensive end Chike Okeafor, resulting in a safety with 2:58 left. Just 21 seconds later, Fitzgerald outraced defenders in the middle of the field to give Arizona a shocking lead. "I said it's now or never," said Roethlisberger. "I told the guys all the film study you put in doesn't matter unless we do it now. I'm proud of the way they responded." Roethlisberger then went to work and converted a 3rd-and-6 at the Pittsburgh 26 with a 13-yard connection to Holmes. A strike to Nate Washington moved the ball to midfield, and two plays later Holmes escaped for his 40-yard gain down the right side to set up the incredible finish. "It hurts so bad so see that clock after that touchdown and to be so close," said Fitzgerald. "To have it snatched away, it hurts." As incredible as the finish was, the conclusion of the first half also produced a record-setting sequence. The Steelers turned the ball over, as defensive end Bryan Robinson tipped the ball and Karlos Dansby came up with the interception at the Pittsburgh 34 at the two-minute mark. Warner then moved the Cardinals to the Pittsburgh five, but under heavy pressure his short pass to Boldin was picked off by Harrison, who rumbled down the right sideline, evading tacklers until finally surging into the end zone despite being taken down by the combination of Steve Breaston and Fitzgerald. Replay was used to determine if Harrison was down before the ball broke the plane of the goal line. Arizona, aiming for its first NFL title since 1947, had only five offensive plays in the first quarter and was outgained in yards, 140-13, but was down only three points after 15 minutes. Reed's first field goal came with 9:45 remaining in the quarter, but Pittsburgh was denied a touchdown after a replay challenge. Roethlisberger's 21-yard pass to tight end Heath Miller moved the ball to the one, but the Cardinals held firm by stopping Gary Russell and Parker on runs. On third down, Roethlisberger rolled to his right and then plowed past defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, and it was ruled that he barely got the ball over the plane of the goal line as he was taken down. Whisenhunt, who was with the Steelers from 2001-06, including three years as offensive coordinator, challenged the call. Replays showed Roethlisberger's left knee was down prior to the ball reaching the goal line, forcing the field goal try. Russell powered off right guard for a one-yard TD run in the opening minute of the second, but Arizona got within 10-7 on Warner's one-yard TD pass to Ben Patrick with 8:34 remaining in the half. The 37-year-old Warner connected on seven straight passes, including a strike to Boldin, who rumbled 45 yards to the one before Patrick made his catch.Game Notes:Arizona held a 407-292 total yardage advantage...Warner completed 10 straight passes at one point in the fourth quarter...Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward started despite a knee injury and had two catches for 43 yards...Edgerrin James was limited to 33 yards on nine carries for Arizona.
