PHOENIX -- Luke Air Force Base has been selected as the preferred location for the new F-35 Pilot Training Center, according to the U.S. Air Force.says the following about the Air Force’s selection of Luke Air Force Base as the preferred location for the new F-35 Pilot Training Center:"Luke Air Force Base is a real economic driver in the West Valley," Peoria Mayor Bob Barrett said. "The F-35 mission ensures Luke's viability for the next 40 years. This is the best news we could have hoped for at this point. The city of Peoria will continue to strongly support the mission and Luke AFB throughout this process." Base officials said the decision is a huge win for Luke, the world's largest F-16 fighter base and the jet's main training site. With the F-16s set to be phased out, the base would have no mission without the new fighter selection. Three squadrons would be based at Luke if the Air Force finalizes its decision early next year, according to the Air Force. Luke contributes thousands of jobs and more than $1 billion annually to the local economy. Arizona Sen. John McCain said he applauds the Air Force for stationing the F-35 Lightning II at Luke Air Force Base.
