POSTED: 8:45 am MST March 10, 2010
PHOENIX -- A law enforcement task force has uncovered and shut down an auto chop shop in a west Phoenix home.Detectives with the Vehicle Theft Task Force said a tip led them to the illegal chop shop cutting up vehicles into pieces then selling off the parts.Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Kevin Wood said officers armed with a search warrant entered a residence Tuesday night near Sweetwater Road and 33rd Avenue.Wood said the chop shop was unusual because it operated on a busy street and had no garage, meaning all the work must have been done in the yard or house, which was a rental.Detectives recovered parts and pieces of two full-size pickup trucks, two Honda sedans and a Mercury SUV.One man, who was not identified, was arrested and charged with operating a chop shop and several other felonies.
