DPS Shuts Down Auto Chop Shop

POSTED: 8:45 am MST March 10, 2010

A law enforcement task force has uncovered and shut down an auto chop shop in a west Phoenix home.

Detectives with the Vehicle Theft Task Force said a tip led them to the illegal chop shop cutting up vehicles into pieces then selling off the parts.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Kevin Wood said officers armed with a search warrant entered a residence Tuesday night near Sweetwater Road and 33rd Avenue.

Wood said the chop shop was unusual because it operated on a busy street and had no garage, meaning all the work must have been done in the yard or house, which was a rental.

Detectives recovered parts and pieces of two full-size pickup trucks, two Honda sedans and a Mercury SUV.

One man, who was not identified, was arrested and charged with operating a chop shop and several other felonies.
