Valley Jogger Hit By Car

Impact Shattered Windshield; Man Listed In Critical Condition

POSTED: 10:42 am MST December 30, 2009

A man was hit by a motorist Tuesday night while he was jogging with his wife near Tatum Boulevard and Pinnacle Peak Road, police said.

The injured man's name has not been released. The victim is in critical condition, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department

Officers said the pair was jogging along Ranger Road when they were struck from behind. The impact was so strong, it shattered the vehicle's windshield, police said.

Investigators said the neighborhood was unusually dark.

"I would suggest if you're going to be jogging in a dark neighborhood to have reflective vests or reflective gear," said Sgt. Joe Sakala of the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers said the motorist stopped. Investigators said they have ruled out speed or alcohol as contributing factors in the accident.
