Fake Cop Gets 14 Years For Sex Assault

PHOENIX -- A man who sexually assaulted a woman he met through a craigslist ad and impersonated a police officer was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison, according to the Superior Court's Web site.Gary Beres, 48, was found guilty on counts including sexual assault, kidnapping and impersonating a peace officer. Per a plea agreement, he was sentenced to lifetime probation for the two counts of attempted sexual assault and 14 years in prison total for the sexual assault.According to court records, Beres met his last victim, an escort, through Craigslist.org. He met her at a motel, pretended to be an officer, arrested her and said she owed him three favors for not taking her to jail.Beres is also a suspect in at least seven other sexual assaults over the past 20 years, but charges have not been filed in those cases.
