Deputies: Family Was Out Buying Christmas Tree

Coconino County sheriff's deputies along with search and rescue members located and rescued a family of five who became stranded when their vehicle got stuck.

Gila County Sheriff's Office personnel and the Arizona Public Service Company assisted in the effort.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office received a report of a stranded and overdue party that was relayed from the GCSO after one of the victims' sister reported that the group never arrived home.

After investigating, police learned that a 19-year-old pregnant mother, her 21-year-old fiance, her 1-year-old son and her two nephews, ages 3 and 5, had left to find a Christmas tree on Monday.

Police found that a Christmas tree permit had been purchased at the Heber ranger station at noon. At about 3:15 p.m., the woman called her sister in Mesa, Ariz., to tell her that their vehicle was stuck and they were working to free it. After that point, multiple attempts to contact the stranded party were unsuccessful.

Coconino deputies in the Forest Lakes area began the initial search and responded using a snow cat from Flagstaff; however, the equipment was delayed in Holbrook due to highway closures.

GCSO and APSC personnel also used two other snow cats to search Forest Service Road 300, also known as Rim Road, where the stranded victims were believed to be. They were found with their vehicle at about 4:30 a.m.

Authorities said though all five of the victims were cold and hungry, they did not need medical attention and were taken back to their home in Payson, Ariz.

Police said the victims told investigators that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to slide off the road and into an embankment.
