PHOENIX -- There have been 51 accidents involving Metro Light Rail trains since the transportation system started in December 2008.The most recent occurred Wednesday night when a van smashed into an oncoming train, then wrapped around a utility pole.No one was seriously hurt, but Valley driver Jason Goldberg said it's another example of the confusion light rail has created."Roads are being closed off. Lanes are being closed off," said Goldberg. "I don't think there's been adequate markings, especially since things are changing every day.""I think a lot of people get confused when the light rail crosses two different ways to go," said Nick Penstar of Phoenix.Phoenix Public Transit Department Commander Louis Tovar said the biggest problem is on one-way streets. So far, Phoenix has seen 37 light rail accidents; 25 of them were on one-way streets.City officials are currently looking at ways to reduce the number of light rail collisions, but until there's an answer, Tovar said drivers need to pay better attention."They do have their own dedicated traffic signals right in front of them, and if they simply just follow the traffic signals, they'd be safe," Tovar sad.
