PHOENIX -- An El Mirage man held police in a standoff at a home Monday night, possibly in an effort to coax officers into shooting him, El Mirage police said.Officers went to the house at 9:55 p.m. after a man called 911 and told a dispatcher that he had choked his wife and had rifles and bombs in the house. He identified himself as "Dick Butkus." He gave police his address in the 12700 block of Flores Drive. The officers set up a perimeter around the house, which was dark. No sounds were heard and no movement was visible inside.Neighbors told police that the man who lived in the house had arrived in a vehicle and parked it in the driveway about 10 minutes before police arrived. He was later identified as Malachy Joseph Riley.Attempts to contact the caller were not successful. At about 10:10 p.m., Riley, 29, came out of the house and stood at the front door with his left hand in his jacket, as if to simulate having a gun, police said. They said he then pulled his hand from his jacket and yelled "Bang! Bang! Bang!"Riley ignored police commands and it was another 15 minutes before police negotiated Riley into surrendering peacefully, police said. He was taken into custody and booked on disorderly conduct and false reporting charges, police said."The officers at the scene showed great restraint and firearms discipline by de-escalating the situation without force or injury to anyone," the Police Department said in a press release.Police found the phone used to make the 911 call in Riley's jacket, police said.No firearms or explosives were found in the home, police said.
