PHOENIX -- Police charged the parents of an 8-year-old gang rape victim with child abuse on Friday after an indictment alleged that the Liberian girl's parents failed to protect their daughter.Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced that both Hemie Dio, 59, and Wedeh Dio, 47, were charged with seven felony class 5 counts of child abuse, and one count of felony class 3 child abuse. The eyes of the nation turned to the girl's plight after she was allegedly lured into a shed and sexually assaulted by four underage boys in July, all of whom have been charged in connection with the incident. The indictment accuses the girl's parents of creating a pattern of conduct that repeatedly caused the girl to suffer neglect or abuse, and it outlined offenses dating back to October 2007.The investigation, conducted by the Phoenix and Glendale police departments, found numerous referrals to Arizona Child Protective Services dating back to late 2005. There were also a total of five police reports in the submitted indictment, including two child neglect reports and two child abuse reports. The defendants were indicted on Thursday and warrants were issued. The duo was arrested on Friday by Phoenix police, Thomas said."We appreciate the efforts of Phoenix police and our prosecutors in bringing this case forward. It's truly heartbreaking that this young girl is a victim in two criminal cases," Thomas said. The Dios were taken to the Maryvale precinct for processing. There is no word yet on when they will appear in court.Stay with KPHO and KPHO.com for the latest details on this developing story.
