Layoffs Mean Longer MVD Waits

You can expect to spend more time waiting in line the next time you go the Motor Vehicles Division.

“There's no doubt that some customers are going to see their wait times go up,” said Doug Nintzel, Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman.

ADOT announced it would lay off 115 employees Tuesday, and the majority of those workers are customer service representatives at the MVD.

Nintzel said the average wait time is currently 25 minutes.

He expects the cuts to increase wait time to about 30 minutes.

“It will vary from location to location,” he said.

It could be just the beginning of increased wait times at MVD offices.

The state plans to shut down 12 of its 61 offices, and state budget problems could mean even more cuts may be made to MVD’s budget.

“We have no other choice,” Nintzel said.

Arizona’s fiscal problems have had a severe impact on ADOT, which oversees MVD.

State fee and tax collections are down 7 percent from 2008.

State lawmakers have swept $500 million in ADOT funds to cover other state expenses.

MVD customers at the South Mountain office in South Phoenix said wait times are already too long.

"Oh, it's going to be terrible," said Antonio Parra, an MVD customer. "A couple of weeks ago, it took an hour and a half to get through.”

“I think it’s just going to be an inconvenience for anybody to come in and just do any little thing,” said Lupita Chavez, another MVD customer.
