Docs Prepare For 3rd Wave Of H1N1

Could Arrive For The Holidays, Health Officials Say

The worst may not be over when it comes to the H1N1 virus, according to state health officials.

Dr. Karen Lewis with Arizona's Department of Health Services predicts that a third wave of H1N1 is on the way.

"If we look back at other pandemics," said Lewis. "Often it would simmer down for a while then come back for another month or two in full strength."

Lewis believes this third wave will hit around the holidays when the seasonal flu typically starts up.

Since the seasonal flu is a separate strain from H1N1, Lewis said the state could be looking at lot of very sick people.

Phoenix family physician Dr. Paul Coulombe is already preparing for a new batch of patients with flu-like symptoms.

He said holiday dinners and family get-togethers are the perfect storm to spread illness from one family member to another.

"Any time you get a group of people together, especially coming from other places, it's a great way to spread things," said Coulombe. "You're sharing meals and preparing meals together. You really can't let down your guard at this point."

Coulombe said the best way to protect you and your family from this third wave is to get a vaccine shot for H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Other prevention measures like constant hand washing and coughing into your sleeve will be helpful, as well.
