3 Soldiers Swept Up In Crime Sweep

PHOENIX -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested three U.S. Army soldiers during its two-day crime-suppression sweep Tuesday, authorities said.According to a news release from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Dwayne Campbell, Llewellyn Stamoulis and Romaine May were taken into custody after deputies discovered 680 pounds of marijuana and $10,000 in cash during a north Phoenix traffic stop.The three men were wearing fatigues and identified themselves with government-issued photo military identification cards, deputies said.The men were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, drug transportation, money laundering and conspiracy. The driver was also charged with driving with a suspended license.By the end of the operation, deputies had arrested 51 suspects and 37 suspected illegal immigrants. Thirty-four of the suspected illegal immigrants will be charged under state human smuggling laws.The other three suspected illegal immigrants were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
