Neighbors: Man Killed By Police 'Confrontational'

MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa police officer who was serving order of protection papers shot a man dead Friday afternoon, investigators said.The incident happened just after 1 p.m. at a home near Higley Road and University Drive.Police were serving the papers against a 22-year-old man by his 21-year-old girlfriend, investigators said.According to the Maricopa County Assessor's office, the home owned by Jeffery Heinze and his girlfriend, whose name CBS 5 News isn't releasing.At some point during the officer's conversation with him, Heinze pulled out a knife and the officer shot and killed him, investigators said.Neighbors said Heinze had a reputation in the neighborhood as a troublemaker who they said used to speed down the street in his Volkswagen van, even when children were playing outside."I came out to get him to slow down, he got out of his car, came over to me, he said he was going pull a gun on me," said neighbor Jake Everts.Police say nobody else was hurt in the shooting. Heinze used to manage Cricket telephone stores in the East Valley.
