Police said a man confessed to his girlfriend that he killed a man over money and then tossed the body into a Glendale Dumpster.

Miguel Sanchez, 24, was arrested Monday evening and booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder.

According to a public information officer from the Phoenix Police Department, the man's body was discovered on Oct. 27 at 8721 N. 69 Ave. by a resident at the apartment complex taking out the trash.

Officers arrived and found a body bound and wrapped in several blankets stuffed inside a 50-gallon trash can placed in the Dumpster, according to police.

An autopsy later revealed the victim had died from blunt force trauma to the head and several stab wounds.

Homicide detectives worked through the weekend at an arson scene near 4400 W. Bethany Home Road. Police said the tenant, Paul Kapitz, was not at home.

On Oct. 31, detectives said they learned that Kapitz had been reported as a missing person. Family members said that they had sent a shirt to Kapitz that matched the shirt the victim found in the Dumpster had been wearing, according to a police probable cause statement.

On Sunday, detectives, armed with a search warrant, entered the apartment and found several blood stains. The next day, Phoenix police said they were called to 3442 N. 69th Drive after receiving a 911 call from the resident stating that his nephew may have killed someone. The nephew was identified as Miguel Sanchez, police said.

Detectives said Sanchez admitted going to Kapitz's apartment to rob him and used a gun to scare him, struck him with gun several times, placed him in the Dumpster and started the fire to cover the evidence, according to the probable cause statement.

Investigators said they determined the arson was "an attempt to cover a murder scene."
