'Almost Surreal' How Much Luggage Was Packed Into Home Of Keith, Stacy King, Police Say

Phoenix police have arrested two people accused of stealing about 1,000 bags from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport passengers, authorities said. According to an overnight report from the Phoenix Police Department, Keith King, 62, and Stacy Legg-King, 38, were arrested on burglary charges after officers discovered the bags during an investigation into luggage theft from Sky Harbor.

Officers said Keith King first caught their attention when they arrested him on suspicion of stealing a piece of luggage about three weeks ago. He was later released.

Police suspected he had stolen luggage before, so they followed him, and on Monday, officers caught him stealing more bags off a luggage carousel, police said.

According to documents from Keith King's initial court appearance, King entered the terminal more than 64 times in the past several months, yet hadn't caught a flight at Sky Harbor within the past year, police said.

As officers waited for a warrant to search King's west Valley home, they noticed smoke coming from the chimney, police said.

Inside, they found a purse burning in the fireplace. Police said Legg-King also burned identification papers, credit cards and stolen passports.

Officers also found luggage piled in the hallways and bedrooms as well as clothing, shoes, appliances and electronics strewn about the house, according to court documents.

"The amount of luggage being stored inside the residence was almost surreal, and it was obvious that the property strewn about the residence in piles did not belong to defendant Keith King," investigating Officer Kendall Goo wrote.

Neighbors said they were suspicious of the couple even before the arrest. Apparently, they would drive home hauling a trailer early in the morning.

"It was 4 a.m. in the morning, and this fellow comes driving by with his two-horse trailer, and it is packed," said neighbor Eugene Huneycutt. "And I can't say it's packed with luggage (but) it looked like it was packed with items and junk."

The Kings do not own any horses.

Keith King was booked into jail on suspicion of burglary, and Stacy Legg-King, who police believe was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she was arrested, was booked into jail on suspicion of tampering with evidence and theft.

Officials at Sky Harbor International Airport said neither King was a current or former airport employee.

Investigators said it will be difficult to track down who the luggage belongs to because the suspects stripped off all identifying tags.

Police said people who believe they may be victims should call 602-495-7808.
