Deputies Chase Man Armed With Rifle

POSTED: 1:02 pm MST November 2, 2009
UPDATED: 1:27 pm MST November 2, 2009

A man who claimed he had been "wronged" by several people and threatened to "take them out" led sheriff’s deputies on a chase in Yavapai County, sheriff’s investigators say.

Bruce Burger, 46, surrendered without incident on Saturday. Sheriff’s deputies said they found he was carrying ammunition. They said they also discovered a rifle in his truck and extra ammunition in the vehicle.

The incident began late Saturday morning when deputies received a call of a family fight in the 2800 block of Dana Street in Humboldt.

While en route, deputies said they were contacted by Burger’s girlfriend that he was extremely distraught and armed with a rifle inside the home.

Deputies said they brought Burger's girlfriend to a safe area and then set up surveillance on the Dana Street home.

A deputy saw Burger leave the home, place an object in a truck and drive away, sheriff’s investigators said.

The deputy followed Burger who drove north and entered east Highway 169 from Foothill Drive, investigators said.

Deputies said they lost sight of Burger as he exited the highway onto Old Cherry Road in what investigators said was an apparent attempt to return to his previous neighborhood.

A short time later, deputies said they located Burger driving his truck and attempted to stop him by activating their overhead lights. Burger refused and sped away into an area of heavy brush, deputies said.

Deputies checked the area on foot and determined that Burger had returned to Old Cherry Road and had driven away.

Assisting deputies briefly pursued Burger again, but due to the rough terrain, were unable to close the distance, investigators said.

Neighbors in the area contacted deputies after discovering that Burger had intentionally rammed his truck into a water tank and attached control panel, investigators said.

Neighbors told deputies Burger made previous threats when he lived in the area, investigators said. Another witness told deputies he had just seen Burger point his rifle towards deputies searching the area. The YCSO Swat team was the alerted.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter was called to assist along with ground units from DPS and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement.

The helicopter crew eventually located Burger's truck as he drove and occasionally stopped along Old Cherry Road. Deputies were eventually able to apprehend him peacefully.

Burger was booked into jail on charges of disorderly conduct per domestic violence and aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, along with a few other charges.
