Student Shoots Self In Front Of Professor

David Solnick Set To Graduate With Master's Of Science Design This Fall

Arizona State University is offering counseling this afternoon for those who may have known a student who comitted suicide Monday on campus.

Police have identified the 59-year-old graduate student who shot himself in front of a professor midday, authorities said.

Tempe resident David Solnick was talking to Prof. Mookesh Patel when he pulled out a gun and shot himself.

There were no other injuries reported; however, authorities said one other person witnessed the shooting.

Solnick was dead when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Authorities said Solnick was doing well as a third-year graduate student with decent grades.

In his various online profiles, Solnick, who grew up in South Africa, described himself as a "visual communication designer and multimedia artist." He was scheduled to complete his Master's of Science Design this fall.

He had previously received his Bachelor's of Fine Arts from ASU in 2004.

ASU cancelled classes Monday in the College of Design; however, the building was set to reopen Tuesday.

School Uses Emergency Text-Messaging System

An alert went out on the school's emergency text-messaging system about 30 minutes after the event.

"Arizona State University is deeply saddened to report that a male graduate student committed suicide at the Architecture South building on the Tempe campus this morning," Newberg said in the alert.

Newberg also said the school will have counseling services available to students, faculty and staff who may have known the student "to help ease their pain at this difficult time."

Design student Ben Tieni, who was in the building at the time of the shooting, said the school's response was "really quick."

"I feel there's not a lot of places (where) I feel safer than at the school," Tieni said. He also said the design students were a tightly knit group.
