The Arizona Foundation for Women paid tribute to the nation's top female achievers Monday, presenting its top honor to former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Albright, who was the first woman to serve in her position, was awarded the Sandra Day O'Connor Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I believe the world would be a better place if women were politically and economically empowered," Albright said.

Previous recipients of the award include Laura Bush, Elizabeth Dole, Sally Ride, Janet Napolitano and Erin Brockovich.

The Arizona Foundation for Women helps women and children by fighting against domestic violence and child abuse and promoting self-esteem and self-sufficiency.
