PHOENIX -- Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl has come under fire for comments he made regarding maternity care during a hearing on health care reform Sept. 25."I don't need maternity care," he said during the hearing. "Requiring that on my insurance policy is something that I don't need and will make the policy more expensive."Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., interrupted him, saying, "I think your mom probably did."According to the Huffington Post, Kyl was defending his proposed amendment to delete language defining which benefits employers are required to cover from the bill.Valley mothers and fathers turned out to a rally Wednesday to show their disapproval."Mothers in this country are not going to stand by while you continually either charge us more or deny care while treating maternity care like a disease," said mother Michelle Davidson.State Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix, said as many as 500,000 Arizona women don't have insurance that covers maternity care."Right now in Arizona and throughout this country, many women buy and pay for health care that does not include maternity care," Sinema said.Sinema, a Democrat, is the only lawmaker from Arizona selected for President Barack Obama's White House Health Care Reform Task Force.
