Baby Boy Found Dead In Hospital Bathroom

UPDATED: 5:50 pm MST October 1, 2009

Glendale police are investigating the death of a newborn baby boy found in a hospital bathroom.

Officers said they responded to a call Saturday between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center after hospital staff found an unresponsive baby in the emergency room bathroom.

Police said a 15-year-old girl came into the hospital for medical treatment for severe stomach pains and delivered the baby in the bathroom without anyone else knowing about it.

Hospital staffers were unsuccessful in attempts to save the baby.

Authorities are awaiting results of an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of the death.

Police said they know who the teenager is but they're not releasing information about her.

"There are a variety of reasons why women may not be able to keep or care for their baby," Sarah Boggan, public relations specialist at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center said in statement.

She said Banner Thunderbird Medical Center wants to remind everyone about an Arizona law allowing people to voluntarily leave an infant with a Safe Haven Provider, like Banner Thunderbird . "In addition to the Glendale hospital, which has a safe haven drop off drawer, other Safe Haven Providers are: medical staff at any hospital, fire stations and firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, adoption agencies, private welfare agencies and churches that have a sign indicating they are a Safe Haven Provider," Boggan said.
