UPDATED: 4:25 pm MST September 22, 2009

Phoenix police arrested an attorney and another woman Monday on suspicion of smuggling drugs to a prisoner during a court proceeding, authorities said.

Tempe attorney David De Costa, 42, was slipping heroin and methamphetamine to Jesse Alejandro for a month before his arrest, a representative for the Phoenix Police Department said.

According to paperwork from De Costa's initial appearance, Alejandro is a member of the Mexican Mafia. He is in custody on charges of murder and using another attorney to smuggle illegal drugs into a jail, police said.

In return for smuggling the drugs, De Costa received "sexual favors," police said.

According to police, Emily Ann Keen, 19, helped him smuggle the drugs while she was on release for another felony offense, police said.

Officers searched Keen's home and discovered an unspecified amount of narcotics and cash, police said.

Both De Costa and Keen face charges of transporting and selling narcotics and dangerous drugs, giving contraband to a prisoner, and managing and financing a criminal syndicate.

De Costa's bond was set at $1 million cash.
