POSTED: 6:13 pm MST August 24, 2009
UPDATED: 6:51 am MST August 25, 2009

Cycling enthusiast and commercial real estate developer Dave Collins, 45, was critically injured when the bicycle he was on slammed into the back of an SUV that had hit the brakes to avoid another car.

Collins and other Mesa riders were taking part in the annual One Thousand Warriors Ride south of Salt Lake City to raise money for wounded veterans' families.

Witnesses said Collins and others may have been going 45 miles an hour on the narrow road when they hit the SUV.

Collins reportedly smashed bones in his face and ripped open his jugular vein in the accident and was given emergency treatment that may have helped save his life by doctors who were riding in the race.

One other Mesa rider is reportedly hospitalized in critical condition after puncturing a lung in the crash and several other Mesa riders were hurt but not as seriously.
