Gas Leak Forces Wal-Mart Evacuation

8 Workers Examined For Nausea, Dizziness

UPDATED: 4:35 pm MST July 9, 2009

About 120 employees and customers of a Wal-Mart in Maricopa were evacuated and eight workers examined for carbon monoxide poisoning after a gas leak was detected in the bakery, fire officials said.

Firefighters found some employees complaining of nausea, light headedness and dizziness when they arrived at about 9:20 a.m.

Crews rapidly evacuated the building and then swept the area using gas monitoring equipment. They said they found the building to be safe to re-enter.

The cause of what sickened the bakery workers is still undetermined.

Maricopa's Medical Services Unit and the Gila River Fire Department helped to set up an area to care for the evacuated workers. They provided water, shade and cooling to the employees who were out in the 100-degree heat, while fire operations were under way.

Eight workers were evaluated and released; one was transported to Casa Grande regional hospital for nausea and further evaluation.
