PHOENIX -- At a news conference in February, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio publicly criticized the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for not cooperating with his investigation into the board. That news conference took place right after Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Arpaio’s deputies had racially profiled people while enforcing illegal immigration laws.CBS 5 News asked the sheriff the following question at the February news conference: “Given the premise of this news conference, if the attorney general chooses to investigate you, would you comply with the investigation?”The sheriff responded, “Be my guest.”Attorney General Eric Holder did order the investigation into Arpaio’s office. Initially, the sheriff cooperated with the investigation. But on Wednesday, Arpaio announced that he would no longer cooperate with investigators from the Department of Justice, claiming that the investigation was “not grounded in facts.”“We’re going to fight this to the bitter end,” Arpaio said on Wednesday. On Thursday, CBS 5 News asked Arpaio if it was hypocritical of him to demand that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors cooperate with his investigations, while he choose not to cooperate with the Department of Justice.Arpaio denied that it was hypocritical and said comparing the two was like comparing apples to oranges. He said his investigations are criminal investigations and are prompted by “concrete information” that he is looking to confirm. He said the DOJ’s investigation is a civil one in which they don’t have any concrete information, but are rather just searching for something he did wrong.“They weren’t playing the game straight with us, so why would we cooperate with them if they’re not going to be fair?” Arpaio said.Arpaio also believes that the DOJ’s investigators have been unethical during the investigation process and should also tell him if they believe any wrongdoing has been committed.“We are not going to cooperate with them until they tell us if we did anything wrong,” Arpaio said.Because of those reasons, Arpaio believes he does not have to cooperate, no matter what he said in February. He also wants the Inspector General to investigate the Department of Justice for their actions during this investigation.
