Man Indicted In Wheelchair Attack

Benny Peralta Had Been Hired As Caretaker

POSTED: 5:46 pm MST July 6, 2009

A caretaker has been indicted in connection with the attack of a wheelchair-bound man and his wife in Phoenix, the county attorney's office said.

A grand jury indicted Benny Peralta on one count of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of armed robbery.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Phoenix Police, officers found the victim on June 24 with multiple stab wounds to his back and neck.

When the victim's wife tried to help her husband, Peralta beat her in the head with a frying pan and stole her wallet, according to the statement.

Mesa Police arrested Peralta a day later.

Peralta had been hired to care for the male victim, police said. Peralta allegedly attacked the victims when they told him he was fired.

The probable cause statement said that after Peralta was arrested, he told police he wished he had used a better knife because he would have succeeded in killing the victim.
