A homeowner who was briefly trapped inside his burning home in the Biltmore area suffered smoke inhalation, Phoenix firefighters said.

The first-alarm fire started sometime overnight but was still burning at dawn Sunday.

The man inside the house near 24th Street and Camelback Road was the one who called the fire department.

He was trapped inside but was able to get himself out using an escape ladder and his scuba equipment, firefighters said.

The home, valued somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million, was a total loss.

Fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
