PHOENIX -- At a tiny office building connected to Phoenix Memorial Hospital, every room is filled with food, hygiene products, sports equipment and games. The items ultimate destination is either Iraq or Afghanistan. They will be sent in boxes and addressed to soldiers. Volunteers like Peg Gildersleeve will help get them there, working for a group called 'Packages From Home.'“If you can’t stand behind (the soldiers), stand in front of them. We’re at war. That’s my motto,” Gildersleeve said.Last year, the group sent more than 10,000 boxes filled with items to soldiers overseas. Jan Johnson is the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Coordinator attached to the group.“My folks raised a patriot,” Johnson said. “It’s something I can do to help the military.”This year, however, the group has struggled to get the boxes sent. They don’t have a shortage of items to mail; they just don’t have enough money to cover the shipping costs.Because of that, their office is filled with boxes waiting to be mailed. Each box costs about $10 to ship.To donate to the group, go their website here.
