QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. -- Eleven students have been arrested in the wake of a huge fight at Canyon State Academy on Wednesday morning, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said on Thursday. Those arrested were boys, ages 16 to 19. They have been booked on charges of aggravated assault.Four staff members suffered injuries.MCSO and Gilbert Police Department were both requested to respond at first, but the situation was quickly brought under control, deputies said.Several staff members were escorting a student to detention during a break between classes, deputies said. The action angered several students and a fight broke out, sheriff's investigators said.Deputies said dozens of students and staff members were engaged in hand-to-hand combat in classrooms and hallways, with some students using broomsticks as weapons.Injuries suffered by the four staff members were minor and no one was taken to the hospital, deputies said."Teachers have a tough enough job today without having to go to school every day worrying about being physically assaulted like this," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Hopefully, these students will be held responsible by the criminal justice system."
