A woman who has helped one of Gilbert's biggest nonprofits organize events is facing felony charges for her alleged involvement in a prescription drug ring.

Mesa police said Cathy Padilla, 47, faces more than 100 felony charges, including 54 counts of obtaining a controlled substance through fraudulent means, and the drug ring defrauded insurance companies of at least $10,000.

Padilla was arrested June 3 and is one of seven Phoenix-area residents accused of selling drugs obtained through fake prescriptions from a Mesa medical clinic where she worked as a manager.

She has been Gilbert Promotional Corp.'s president for almost two years and helped the city organize events like the Gilbert Days Rodeo.

The prominent Gilbert group said Padilla has been removed from her post.

Records show Padilla received about 53 fake prescriptions for a pain reliever in the past 12 months and sold each prescription for $100.

Police said Padilla told them she had forged the prescriptions, but also stole blank prescription pads and sold them.
