Traffic Stop Results In Drug Arrests

CORDES JUNCTION, Ariz. -- Cocaine, marijuana and a loaded .40 caliber handgun are found during a traffic stop that results in two arrests on Tuesday, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.Jimmy Gonzalez, 30, of Gallup, N.M., and Joseph Gonzalez, 27, of Tucson, were arrested on Interstate 17 near Cordes Junction on charges of transportation of a narcotic drug, transportation of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jimmy Gonzales was also charged with a weapons misconduct violation.Deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office stopped the vehicle and approached the the driver, Jimmy Gonzalez, about several equipment violations and a license plate obstruction.Jimmy Gonzalez claimed he was taking his brother to New Mexico for medical issues and shared a travel timeline that changed during the conversation, deputies said.Following a record check, the deputy told Jimmy Gonzalez he planned to let a K-9 conduct an exterior sniff of the car. Jimmy Gonzalez told the deputy he had a loaded .40 caliber handgun under the front seat.Earlier, both occupants denied the vehicle contained any weapons, deputies said.The K-9 alerted deputies to the trunk seam of the vehicle. While searching the trunk, a deputy found a large brick of marijuana inside a suitcase and several smaller bricks of marijuana inside a red and black duffle bag hidden behind a pile of clothes, sheriff's investigators said. The total weight of marijuana found is just less than 20 pounds.During a further check of the passenger area, deputies said they found a purple Crown Royal cloth bag hidden behind a front dash console. Inside the bag, deputies discovered several ounces of cocaine.Both men remain in custody on a $20,000 bond.
