PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted 2-2 Wednesday to decline $1.4 million in state funds to help county offices enforce illegal immigration laws.Supervisors Fulton Brock and Andy Kunasek voted to accept the funds; however, Mary Rose Wilcox and Don Stapley voted against the motion.Chairman Max Wilson was absent from the meeting.According to public information officer Richard de Uriarte, "Stapley said he would be willing to reconsider his vote after being briefed."The money would have gone to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to help enforce sanctions for employers who hire illegal immigrants. The office would also transfer some of the funds to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to help with enforcement. The supervisors accepted $1.6 million from the state as part of an agreement with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in May to help pay for illegal immigration enforcement.
