MCSO Announces Furloughs

POSTED: 10:16 pm MST April 30, 2009
UPDATED: 9:58 pm MST May 1, 2009

In an effort to cut $17 million from its budget, furloughs are in the works at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio confirmed nearly 800 deputies and 300 support personnel would be forced to take a furlough of seven days, or 56 hours.

Arpaio said the furloughs are a better alternative than layoffs. He said the department may have to make some adjustments, but public safety would not be compromised.

Detention officers will not be impacted.
