Councilwoman Scolds Jack Harris

There's a big blank space on the Web site of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board right now.

AZ POST, as it’s known in the law enforcement community, is the group that certifies and disciplines police officers around the state.

A couple of weeks ago, Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris resigned from the board without telling the Phoenix city manager or council.

“I called him this morning and asked him why and he said he was trying to lighten his load,” said City Councilwoman Thelda Williams.

“Poor excuse, poor excuse. If he had that kind of problem he could have come to anyone in the city and we could have adjusted," she added.

Williams is furious because that spot on the board will now go to a police chief from another city.

“The chief better go back begging for his seat on that committee, period," said Williams.

They’re choice words that apparently Harris has chosen to ignore.

“I'm not sure she has a full understanding of the role on that board," said Assistant Police Chief Andy Anderson.

Anderson said Phoenix would still have a strong influence at AZ POST through its committee seats.

When asked if Harris should have at least informed the city manager and council about his decision to leave the board, Anderson said perhaps.

“In hindsight maybe we'd say now he probably should have," said Anderson.
