TEMPE, Ariz. -- Students at Arizona State University want to know why school officials are talking about spending millions of dollars to fix up Sun Devil Stadium when the school is laying off teachers and cutting back classes.

ASU is in the middle of a major budget crunch, which is why students like Joanna Wisniewski want to know why school officials are discussing a plan to spend millions of dollars to renovate Sun Devil Stadium.

"Since there are so many budget cuts, a lot of ASU students and teachers are getting cut off and laid off so probably right now renovations are not a priority," said Wisniewski.

State lawmakers are considering a bill designed to help ASU raise money to pay for more than $100 million in improvements to the 51-year-old stadium.

Vice President of ASU's public affairs Virgil Renzulli said the plan has nothing to do with the current economy, classrooms or cutbacks.

It is strictly designed to allow the school to charge a fee to developers who want to build on the school's land.

In addition, if the stadium is not fixed up in next 10-12 years, it may be be torn down.

"You can't charge people to come to a football game that you don't put on," Renzulli said. "You don't get TV revenue for football you don't put on. If you cease the function, the revenue stops and revenue not only supports football it goes into academic programs, as well."

"Football is one of main sports here and if everyone goes to football games it generates money for the entire school, " said ASU student Cara Purcell.

ASU officials insist that Sun Devil Stadium will eventually need an overhaul and this plan will not cost taxpayers anything and will not impact any students, teachers or educational programs.

They hope when the economy turns around, ASU will be in position to generate money from new developers and pay for improvements to Sun Devil Stadium.
